Jamhuri Day celebrations in Mombasa were disrupted after supporters of Governor Hassan Joho and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti clashed at Tononoka grounds.
Makupa OCS is said to have been injured as he led General Service Unit (GSU) and Rapid Response Unit officers in calming the rowdy youth.
The chaos erupted when supports of Awiti ganged up against Joho’s supporters.
It is reported that the two groups heckled and insulted each forcing police officers to swing into action.
Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki was forced to end his speech prematurely, as youth and residents engaged in a war of words.
The crowd refused to heed to Achoki’s call to observe a moment of silence in memory of the victims who perished in the Karai accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
Awiti who has declared interest in the Mombasa gubernatorial race is one of Governor's Joho greatest critics.
He has accused the governor of failing to keep the promises he made during the last general election.
The MP has affirmed that he is the right candidate to take over the county in next year's polls.
