Proceedings at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) came to a premature end after regional politics delayed the election of the speaker.The exercise was adjourned to Tuesday following a dramatic walkout by Tanzania and Burundi EALA legislators from the chambers.EALA had not been transacting business for several weeks owing to lack of representation from Kenya.Before adjournment, the assembly had sworn in its nominees, with Kenya producing nine representatives including Simon Mbugua who was appointed Chairperson, Kennedy Kalonzo Vice-Chairperson and Florence Jematiah as the Secretary.However, the walkout by Tanzania and Burundi legislators caused a quorum hitch during the election of the speaker. Members argued that a quorum hitch house rules do not provide an avenue for stopping the elections.Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania have expressed interest for the speaker position to take over from Daniel Kidega of Uganda.EALA's mandate is to debate and approve the budget of the Community, consider annual reports on the activities of the Community such annual audit among other duties.
