Several people sustained injuries following a stampede that ensued outside the Kenyatta Staduim in Machakos, during the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The chaos erupted shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta's arrival, as a crowd which had been locked out, tried to force their way into the packed stadium.

Officers from the Administration Police, General Service Unit, Anti-riot police and the National Youth Service (NYS) were forced to disperse the crowd, which was demanding entry into the venue.

According to the Standard, a reporter was beaten up for filming the commotion and ordered to shut his camera.

NYS officers at the scene were also accused of brutaly assaulting members of the public, as they sought to calm the crowd.

The injured were taken to Machakos Level 5 referral hospital.
