Rival factions clashed over one student being denied a chance to vie for the post of vice chairman, each quoting their constitution as they defended their positions.

Those opposed to the election said Peter Okoyo had not been given a fair hearing before he could be disqualified from vying.

But the officials, who said the election had to go on, said Okoyo was ineligible as he registered late as a candidate.

In his defence, Okoyo wondered why he was registered as an eligible candidate but was later struck out without sufficient reasons.

Another member, Migel Mandara, alleged that some candidates also registered late but were allowed.

Mandara’s allegations made matters worse. Anarchy descended on the hall as some students decided to vandalise ballot boxes. This led to an exchange of blows among the dissenting allies.

First years students then left the room, vowing to file a petition with the School of Law dean, Wilfred Konosi, for the election to be nullified if not the post of the vice chair.

But Juma warned that the election stands and those who remained would be deemed a quorum and would be allowed to vote.

“If you are leaving remember the election must go on and we ready to do election with those who will remain,” Juma warned.
