Charcoal business in Makongeni estate in Thika and surrounding areas has gained momentum for the last few weeks since the rains started.
At Makongeni Shopping Centre, a tin of charcoals that normally goes for Sh50 is now retailing at Sh70.
One of the sellers in the area, James Wainaina, has attributed the rise in price to increased price by their distributors.
"The distributors say that they are having a difficulty fetching the charcoals from the rural areas due to the heavy rains. Many roads there are poor. A sack of charcoal has gone up by Sh500 which we have to share with our customers," Wainaina said on Wednesday.
In the neighbouring Kisii and Kiganjo estates the same tin retails at Sh75 down from Sh50.
"Though the price of charcoal has gone high at where we get it from, during the rainy season the prices always go high due to high demand," Naftaly Mucheru, another seller at Kisii estate said.
Miriam Wambui who uses charcoal to cook her githeri for sale in Makongeni says that the prices might remain the same till January next year.
"After this wet season, the festive seasons will be here and the demand for charcoal will continue to be high. I expect a change in price from early next year when all these seasons are over," she said.
