The Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati has broken his silence days after declaring President Uhuru Kenyatta president elect following the controversial October 26, 2017 presidential election.
On Thursday, Chebukati was at the Mombasa Law Courts buildings for the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) elections, where he said the electoral body was ready for by-elections across the country.
He disclosed that IEBC had received 5 out of about 300 petitions that would end in by-elections, adding that the commission was already prepared following numerous election petitions filed after August 8, 2017 general elections.
"We already had a budget for the by-elections. We saw how candidates moved to court to challenge the elections... we are still waiting for verdicts in appeals for elections that were nullified," he added.
Addressing the press, Chebukati who the NASA coalition wants out of the commission alongside other commissioners, said the politicians would continue politicking but IEBC would go on with its work.
On matters of boundaries, he said boundary review will start after 2019 population census and further ruled out possibilities of creating new constituencies in the country.
