Embattled IEBC chairman Wafula Chebekati had contemplated resigning if President Uhuru Kenyatta insisted that the controversial October elections take place, says Raila Odinga.
At a meeting with Odinga, Chebukati is said to have insisted that he was not ready to deliver a fre and fair poll, adding that he was to seek clarification from court, of which a negation could have led to his imminent resignation.
"We sat with Chebukati and he told us that he was not ready to conduct the polls due to tension and a divided commission," Odinga said.
Prior to the elections, at a press conference, Chebukati publicaly admitted that he was not ready for elections adding that political players should have met to resolve the stalemate.
Interestingly, Ex- IEBC commissioner Roselyne Akombe had exposed intrigues within the commission, alleging that some commissioners were working under strict instructions.
"He said if Uhuru was not ready to have elections postponed, he was to move to court and should he have lost the bid, then he would resign," added Odinga.
But in a shocking move, Chebukati surprisingly proceeded with the elections even with the withdrawal of Odinga from the race.
Even with declaration of President Uhuru Kenyatta as winner, the commissioner is facing hard questions following the decision to cancel elections in 25 constituencies.
