Courtesy: The Star Political commentator and columnist Okech Okendo has taken a dig into embattled IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati. In a detailed opinion editorial published with The Star Newspaper, Okendo opined that Chebukati was responsible for the bungled August 8 polls that led to the nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta's reelection victory. The Supreme Court consequently ordered for a fresh election, directing IEBC to ensure that the process is conducted in strict adherence to the Constitution and applicable laws.According to Okendo, the apex court presented IEBC with a second chance to redeem itself, which it failed spectacularly."The buck stops with Chebukati — he is the boss. Chebukati said he did not want to leave a legacy of an IEBC chairman who bungled a presidential election. He stayed on to mangle democracy a second time," he opined."The IEBC has betrayed its independence. Its chairman is indecisive. The man cannot fact-check. The fumble of October 26 was telling: During the first IEBC briefing, he said the turn out was 48 per cent from 267 constituencies. This was downsized to 33 per cent — a moving target of political opportunism," he added.Several election observers groups have since raised credibility questions on the just concluded October 26 polls boycotted by the Opposition coalition NASA.
