IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati has sent Jubilee luminaries into panic mode. The party is now demanding that the parliamentary joint committee on election laws amendment (chaired by Baringo North MP William Cheptumo) must interrogate Chebukati to clear the air about resignation allegation. Through its party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, Jubilee is stating that such a move will cause a constitutional crisis.
“We have heard reports that the commission chairperson is planning to leave office. Such a move will likely plunge the country into a crisis and he should make it clear before the repeat presidential elections,” said Tuju as quoted by Mediamax.
Tuju said that the infamous amendments on election laws (due to timing) would prevent an unnecessary constitutional crisis. Earlier, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission backed the amendments. EACC said the Peter Gichira and Maina Kiai cases were heard and determined at similar timings as the current situation.
The move has been received differently across the political divide. The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) is among the entities that are faulting the timing.
