Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati now says that the body is ready for the proposed referendum.
In a press briefing in Kitui Tuesday, Chebukati noted that the agency's ability to hold the national practice remains unaffected by its current woes resulting from the recent mass resignation of commissioners.
"In the event that a referendum is fronted, we are in a position and are ready to conduct it. All the commission's operations are functioning and the only paralysis we are experiencing is a boardroom quorum," he said.
He added that the body will soon be embarking on a scheme to replace the four commissioners who have since deserted the national poll body.
"The commission is looking to reconstitute itself and replace the commissioners who have exited to achieve the minimum threshold to enable us proceed with our constitutional responsibilities," he added.
The resignation spree was kicked off by former commissioner Roslyn Akombe just before the October 26 presidential re-run before Vice Chair Consolata Nkatha, Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya followed suit recently.
The referendum push seeks to expand the top leadership organ and revert the nation back to the parliamentary leadership system and has received full backing from opposition leaders.
