Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has said he will not resign.
The chairman was responding to calls by Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) Executive Director David Kegoro who asked him to leave the commission and disband it over the malpractises recorded in the August polls.
Kegoro on Wednesday demanded that IEBC and its secretariat must be disbanded before the next polls to pave way for dialogue on forming a new independent electorate body.
But Chebukati has dismissed Kegoro saying that those were only personal views.
He argued that IEBC is in office legitimately according to the constitution and set laws.
“At the end of the day the commissioners are in office because of their competence, they did not just come into office, they were interviewed and brought into office by the nature of the constitutional provision and clear guidelines as to the term of office,” said Chebukati.
He said the commission did a commendable job in holding two elections in a period of three months, adding that the Supreme Court had just confirmed this in their ruling.
“As a commission we believe we did two elections in three months which is a commendable effort as an electoral body and I don’t believe there is any electoral body in Africa that has been able to do so,” he said.
