Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor wants private hospitals and medical practitioners to reduce the cost of cancer treatment and consultation services.
Speaking on Friday at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) during the launch of a free cancer screening exercise, Daniel Chemno argued that this move would help decongest MTRH.
“It’s expensive to treat cancer disease and it becomes even more expensive if one is being treated at a private medical facility and this is why I urge those private doctors to reduce their cost so that Kenyans who cannot get the service at a public hospital can still get the treatment there at a cost almost similar to one at government facility,” Chemno said.
Statistics by the Kenya Cancer Association suggest that 80 people die daily from cancer in Kenya.
Majority of those diagnosed with cancer are women aged between 30 and 49 years and men aged between 45 and 50 years.
