Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno has asked the national government to disarm communities who have weapons illegally in a bid to end cattle rustling and bandit attacks in Baringo, Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.
Speaking from his office on Monday, Chemno alleged that some communities own weapons illegally.
The deputy governor noted that the first step towards attaining security in the bandit prone areas is to disarm the communities.
“The government should move with speed and disarm communities who have guns illegally,” he said.
Chemno said that illegal weapon and trading is the major cause of conflict in Samburu, Turkana, Pokot and Baringo.
The deputy governor said that insecurity in these areas threatens the peace of neighbours.
“We are worried and also concerned by the rising banditry attacks in these areas. The government should act quickly,” said Chemno.
The deputy governor also asked leaders in bandit prone areas to take the initiative and preach peace among their communities.
He said that as leaders they must use their positions to bring warring communities together.
Chemno said that socio-economic development of these areas is in jeopardy if peace is not attained
