Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has accused the Judiciary of inadvertently promoting the sale of illicit liquor.

Speaking in his office on Thursday Chemno said that the courts are lenient to people selling second-generation alcohol thus encouraging them to go back to the business.

“We have fought against the second-generation illegal liquor and arrested the culprits, but our efforts have been derailed by the courts since they are set free after paying a small fine of Sh5,000 that gives them morale to continue,” he said.

He said the courts should charge people involved in the sale and consumption of the second-generation liquor hefty fines which will discourage them from selling or consuming illegal liquor.

“I urge the Judiciary to help us in the fight against the second-generation alcohol which has claimed many lives. People are losing their eyesight and are also forgetting their marital and family responsibilities. With the help of the Judiciary illegal liquor will be a thing of the past” he said

He also gave a warning to those still selling and consuming the illegal liquor that their days are numbered and soon they will be arrested, prosecuted and their licenses withdrawn.
