Uasin Gishu Deputy governor Danie Chemno has called on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite investigations on human rights violations committed by the police.

Speaking when he formally opened IPOA North Rift office in Eldoret town on Thursday, Chemno said the public expects a lot from the authority to oversight and investigate concerns and complains raised by Kenyans against the police.

“I appeal to IPOA to tighten their systems for speeding up of investigations whenever cases and complaints arise,” said Chemno.

“Complaints need to also be updated constantly on the progress of investigations,” he added.

The Deputy governor, however, promised that the county government of Uasin Gishu was committed on muscling up IPOA’s operations adding that it is the responsibility of every Kenyan to contribute to the protection of human rights.

On her part, IPOA vice chairlady Jedidah Ntoyai said the authority is extending its reach and also working to make the people realize and appereciate their functions as a protector of human rights.

“As a board, we are working to meet the constitutions requirement of taking services closer to people. The opening of this office broadens our reach,” she said.

The Eldoret office will serve seven counties in the North Rift region.
