The Chemususu dam project in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County has excess water and the Rift Valley Water Service Board, which is the asset holder, will supply part of the water to Nakuru County.

The board’s chief executive, Japheth Mutai, said that Rongai residents will be the first beneficiaries. He said the project, worth Sh4.9 billion, had the capacity to supply the counties of Baringo and Nakuru with water and still have an excess supply.

Mutai added that the board was committed to providing high quality, cost effective water to their clients.

Rongai, which is one of the six sub-counties in Nakuru County, is semi-arid and most of the residents depend on rain water, which is not very clean. The only river which runs through the sub-county dries up when the rains stop.

Mutai blamed the water shortage in Nakuru town on the increasing population and old rusty pipes which require replacement. He, however, said with the completion of the dam, the water problems in the two counties will be sufficiently addressed.
