Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut has urged Uasin Gishu residents to plant at least one tree during this rainy season.
He said this will help increase the forest cover which is in a dilapidated condition.
“It's sad that currently, we are at 7% forest cover and if every resident plants at least one tree the forest cover will drastically increase to 40%. In the next five years I will ensure we are at 50 % forest cover that’s why I introduced compulsory tree planting programme in all learning institutions and homesteads,” he said in Eldoret town, Friday.
“Let us at least use 10% of our farms to plant trees and avoid deforestation since it is a major contributor to climate change. Trees are essential in conserving our ecosystems,” he added.
He reiterated that he will ensure that companies which use trees such as Raiply and others plant tree before cutting them.
“I will not allow any company to cut trees without replacing them since this leads to delayed rainfall. If you cut one tree plant two,” noted Chepkut.
This comes after he recently moved a motion in parliament to urge Kenyan government to establish compulsory tree planting programme in all learning institutions and homesteads.
