Vivian Cheruiyot on Sunday won her first marathon since she moved from the track.

Cheruiyot, the Olympic 5,000m champion, crossed the line after 2hours 23 minutes 35 seconds to win the Frankfurt Marathon and bring to an end the three-year Ethiopian dominance in the race.

Caroline Kilel was the last Kenyan woman to win the Frankfurt Marathon in 2013.

This was the second Marathon the 34-year-old was competing in after her debut in London where she clocked 2:23:50 to finish fourth.

She now becomes the first-ever Olympic champion to contest and win the IAAF Gold Label road race.

"Happy to win the Frankfurt Marathon today. Conditions were windy. The last 10k was tough. Thanks for all your support," wrote Cheruiyot on her official social media platforms.

President Uhuru Kenyatta led other Kenyans in congratulating her for the maiden Marathon win.

"You have done us proud Vivian Cheruiyot for winning the #frankfurtmarathon," said President Kenyatta on his Twitter @UKenyatta.
