Kiganjo estate chief Daniel Waiguru has urged the residents to erect quality buildings to reduce the risk of their houses being destroyed by the ongoing heavy downpour.
The call comes just days after a church which was undergoing construction in the area was demolished by a storm on Monday afternoon. The storm blew away iron sheets which were used to construct both the walls and the roof of the building.
Speaking from his office in Makongeni, the chief observed that some people just take construction of buildings for granted whereas the building can be a threat to the community living around and even those who will reside in the structures.
“People should take these simple constructions with great caution since we do not want to put the residents at risk. What would happen if those if iron sheets blown away by the wind met a person unknowingly?” he asked.
He pointed that the buildings could also collapse when the believers or the occupants of the structure are inside thus injuring or even killing them.
“We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found erecting a building which proves to be a hazard to the residents,” declared the chief.
Waiguru went on to challenge the area residents to help in the Nyumba Kumi Initiative so as to achieve optimum security in the area.
He said that cooperation of the residents with the security organs in the area will guarantee peaceful co-existence and also will give the residents a chance to do their business in a crime-free environment.
