Ikinu Chief Amos Kamau has called Ikinu farmers to visit his officer for free certified seeds in preparation for the forthcoming planting season.
Speaking today at Ikinu Trading Centre during a public meeting, Kamau said that the government has provided free maize and beans seeds to Kiambu farmers who cannot afford to by certified seeds.
The chief’s appeal comes at a time when government has promised to offer free certified seeds to farmers.
Kamau urged farmers not to plant uncertified seeds as this would affect their production capacity. He said that the initiative by the government is meant to secure food security in the county,
“Certified seeds will help in reducing the chances of food insecurities,” said Kamau.
The administrator urged residents to work closely with agricultural officers in applications of best farming practices to secure food security.
He added that the location has been witnessing sporadic food insecurities due to use of uncertified seeds and warned unscrupulous traders to stop the sale of fake seeds.
“Tough action will be taken against traders selling fake seeds,” said Kamau.
He also urged county government to set more resources for agriculture docket as it has been employing many youth and women.
