A chief in Rongai sub-county over the weekend administered corporal punishment to a local drunkard who is said to have neglected his family while indulging in endless and careless drinking episodes of illicit alcoholic brews. According to a witness, Peter Kimeto of Maji Mazuri village, the 40-year-old man was given 20 strokes of the cane in the presence of his wife and three children who had reported him to the area chief Gibson Tanui over his long absence from home while he was away in drinking dens. Kimeto told our reporter on phone that the man was waylaid by members of the public, who had accompanied the family in searching for him, in the filthy dens before he was taken to the chief’s office. The witness said that the accused, who works as a mechanic in Rongai town, rarely goes home to attend to his family but instead drinks and spends money he earns in illicit brew dens at night in the village in company of ‘wayward’ women. “His wife complained that since he started entertaining wayward women in busaa and chang’aa dens, he had neglected her family and husband duties, thus subjecting his family to suffering,” said Kimeto, adding that the chief gave the drunkard a last warning against the irresponsible habit after the punishment.
