Lanet/Umoja Chief Francis Kariuki has today, Monday, launched an afforestation drive at Umoja Trading Center, Bahati sub-county in Nakuru County.
Addressing Umoja residents, Kariuki said that there is need to arrest climatic changes by greening the county.
“By greening our location, we will be able to arrest the devastating effects of climatic changes,” said Kariuki.
The administrator said that the drive would be extended to schools and other public places to ensure maximum yields.
“We will enjoin public primary schools in this exercise to ensure they too contribute to the afforestation programme,” added Kariuki.
He said that over 200,000 seedlings of trees would be distributed during this rainy season to different parts of Lanet Ward.
“We have over 200,000 seedlings of exotic and indigenous trees which will be distributed to all schools and hospitals in Mereroni and Murunyu sub-locations,” said Kariuki.
He further said that the area would work closely with the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, to achieve the country's target of having 10% under forest cover.
He however warned local residents who are felling trees for charcoal burning, noting that the act was behind degradation of the environment.
“Charcoal burning is illegal and anyone caught felling trees will face the full force of law,” added Kariuki.
He further advised residents to limit human activities along the river banks.
