Ndungiri Location chief Anthony Kipkurui has called the management of the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) at the Menengai Geothermal project to consider offering locals jobs in the state-run corporation.
He said that the company should prioritise giving the locals first chances in employment.
“The company should give back to the community by employing the locals first,” said the chief.
Kipkurui was yesterday speaking at Ndungiri Shopping Centre during a public meeting where he said that the company can transform the livelihoods of the residents by employing them.
Although the commercial viability of the company has not taken off, casual labourers especially the youth can be employed on casual basis,” said the chief.
He added that the area has a great pool of casual workers.
He however urged the youth to involve themselves in other income-generating activities.
“The youth should not depend on GDC to solve the issue of unemployment but they should start small businesses to keep them busy,” said Kipkurui.
The administrator said that the creation of job opportunities by the company would greatly reduce incidences of crime in the region.
Recently the GDC CEO Silas Simiyu said that the company is yet to produce energy on large commercial scale and urged residents to be patient till the company commercialises its operations
