Kamukunji senior assistant chief David Simatei has warned parents who deny their children the right to education and instead use them to fend for the family saying they will be prosecuted.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday, Simatei said it is sad that there are some parents who are still keeping their children at home to help them in family chores, despite the national government offering free and mandatory primary education.
“I am handling over 10 cases of parents who send their children to sell groundnuts, sweets and eggs in bars and restaurants instead of sending them to school to get education which is their right as enshrined in the constitution” he said.
He said any parent in his area of jurisdiction who will be found using school-going children to fend for the family will face the wrath of the law.
“I give a stern warning to parents with such bad behaviour that I will be conducting a door to door exercise and if you will be found that your child has not gone to school you will be arrested and charged with child negligence” he said.
He urged parents to take the advantage of the free primary education by sending their children to get education since it’s their right as enshrined in Kenya’s constitution.
