Kiambu County Women Representative Ann Nyokabi has urged officers in the provincial administration to help fight child labour. Nyokabi expressed her worry over increase of child labour cases in the county especially in urban centres. "Recently there has been a worrying trend over increase of number of children involved in child labour. This is a violation of the children's rights and must be stopped by any means possible," said Nyokabi. Speaking in Thika town on Saturday, after meeting business women, the women representative noted that village elders and chiefs are key to ending child labour. "Village elders and chiefs need to work closely with organisations involved in fighting child labour. The public should also report to the authorities on anybody involved in the vice for legal action to be taken," said Nyokabi. She also urged the government to take legal action to parents who have allowed their children to be employed illegally. “Section 64 of Employment Act, 2007 indicates that, it is an offence for any person who employs, engages, or uses a child in an industrial undertaking in contravention of the provisions of part VII of the Act,” she said She said, such a person will be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh 200,000 or to an imprisonment of not more than one year or both.
