Kikuyu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Mr Elias Kithaura has urged chiefs and their assistants to sensitise the local community on the effects of alcoholism, in an effort to avert the menace.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Kithaura said the administrators should utilise various platforms to educate members of the public on the effects of alcoholism.
He commended administrators for fighting crime through community policing programmes in the area, saying the same effort can be concerted to fight alcoholism.
“Our location and sub-location administrators have proven to be the most effective media in passing information through their regular barazas. If they use this platform effectively, I assure you they will create a positive impact in the war against alcoholism,” he said.
The deputy county boss said alcoholism had contributed not only to break up of families in the area but also deaths.
He noted with concern that many children are forced into the streets following break ups triggered by excessive consumption of liquor, while others are left as orphans.
The DCC called on chiefs and their assistants to step up in the campaign against alcoholism in their areas of jurisdiction for the sake of development.
He further warned those engaging in excessive consumption of alcohol to shun the habit.
Kithaura said those who disturb the peace in neighbourhoods by getting drunk and disorderly risk being arrested.
