Administration officers have launched an operation in Gatundu North targeted to flash out illegal brewers in the region just shortly after the Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i gave an order to crack down on the illegitimate business across the country.

Speaking during the launch of the operation Saturday, the Gatundu North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Amos Mariba directed regional chiefs to start the war on illicit brew and illegal gaming with immediate effect.

According to Mariba, the chiefs have already impounded at least 14 betting machines on the first day of the crackdown, in Mataara, Muirigo, Makwa and Nguna villages where also their owners were apprehended

“The operators will be arraigned in court and charged in accordance with the law. We want to encourage responsible gaming in our area to restore sanity in education, which has really been affected by the addictive practice,” he said.

As the operation continues, the area chiefs and their assistants have so far destroyed 7, 500 litres of illicit brew popularly known as ‘chang’aa’, and 10 drums of its by-product known as of Kangara and destroyed three boilers and three tonnes of firewood in the area.

Mariba appreciated the members of the community for their support in helping the administrative officers.

“We were tipped by members of the public and our officers immediately raided the dens leading to the destruction. We will continue with crackdowns so as to tame outlawed brews and illegal betting in Gatundu North,” he said.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Kiambu that you want Hivisasa to cover?
