Chiefs in Matungulu sub-county in Machakos county have been accused of contributing to the rising cases of defilement and sodomy of minors in the area.
Speaking in Tala town Matungulu OCPD Joseph Chesire observed that the chiefs either do not report or cover-up cases after being compromised, perpetuating the crime.
While warning them of dire consequences from the government, Chesire said that the chiefs and their assistants will be held responsible for the heinous acts committed in their areas of jurisdiction.
“Incidences happen with the full knowledge of chiefs and their assistants who keep silent. We cannot allow the destruction of innocent children. Somebody will be held liable,” said Chesire.
He at the same time cautioned parents who collude with chiefs to cover up the crimes that they also risk prosecution. The officer directed chiefs and their assistants to give maximum support to education officers whenever they follow up such cases in the region.
“It is your duty to assist the education officers whenever they want information on defilement cases within the areas of your jurisdiction,” said the officer.
His words were echoed by Kangundo and Matungulu sub-county children officer Susan Ouma where she said that many cases of defilement mostly involving family members go unreported.
