Health officials in Mombasa are on high alert after the number of people confirmed to be infected with Chikungunya virus increased to 40, up from 32. County Health authorities on Friday confirmed cases of the diseases following tests done by the Kenya Medical Research Institute and Lancet Group of Laboratories.Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Mombasa County Director of Communications Richard Chacha, said cases of Chikungunya have been confirmed in the region.The county government under the leadership of second-time Governor Hassan Joho has called upon residents to use mosquito nets, clear stagnant water, and bushes around their residences and secure the openings in their homes in a bid to curb the rising cases of the disease.Dr Rishad Ali Shosi, a physician in Mombasa, said doctors across the county suspected an outbreak of the disease following the increasing number of persons with joint pains and fever three to four weeks ago. The county government has also expressed its commitment to fighting the disease in different parts.
