A five year old child died after the house she was sleeping in caught fire in Umoja (II) Estate in Lanet-Nakuru on Friday.

The cause of the 6.30 am fire incident is yet to be identified.

According to Umoja Lanet Chief Francis Kariuki, a woman who was in the house together with the child woke up to a cloud of smoke which prompted her to dash out of the house to seek help, leaving the child behind.

Kariuki said that a gas cylinder that was in the kitchen room exploded accelerating the fire further.

Efforts by locals to rescue the child were futile as the fire spread fast immediately the gas cylinder exploded.

Kariuki said that he called the Nakuru County Fire Brigade who arrived on time and managed to put out the fire although extensive damage had been caused.

He said that only few items were salvaged during the inferno.

Community of the Crucified One Church that is enjoined with the house belonging to the headmaster of Lanet-Umoja Primary School also got burnt.

The USA-based church is the main sponsor of the school located next to the house that was destroyed.

The school headmaster doubles as the father in-charge of the church.

Officers from the Scene of Crime together with The Kenya Red Cross paramedics arrived at the scene and took the body of the child to Nakuru County Government Mortuary.

Investigation to the cause of the fire are underway.
