One child died while another one was critically injured on Monday afternoon after they drowned in a dam when they were playing football.
The late Charles Ombego, 9, and Kelvin Omwenga, 8, are said to have been enjoying playing football when the ball allegedly went into the nearby dam in Borabu constituency and the two decided to recover it.
According to a witness, Ombego was unable to survive after drowning while Omwenga used little swimming tactics to save himself given the dam was several metres from the nearby place of residence.
“It was difficult to save them since many of us learnt the about the incident when the survivor had rescued himself from the blink of death. He had swimming tacts unlike his other friend. All we could do was to recover the body of the deceased,” said Tom Obiero.
The survivor was taken hospital while the deceased was taken to the nearby Gucha mortuary awaiting burial.
Area chief David Ogega urged parents to be very cautious with their children during the holidays to avert such kind of incidents.
“It’s sad that Mwongori location has lost a very talented child who could have prospered in the world of sports. Parents have a prime responsibility to take care of these young ones,” he said.
