A nine year old child on Saturday drowned in a pool of water under mysterious circumstances in Riokindo, Kenyenya sub-county, Kisii County.
The minor drowned as she played with her six year old sister in a pool outside their home after a heavy downpour.
Police said her father, Mr Paul Ondieki, reported to officers attached to Kenyenya Police Station that he had pulled his daughter out of the pool.
“We received a call from Mr Ondieki regarding the incident at around 6 p.m. last evening. He had been alerted by his youngest daughter that her sister had disappeared into the water and had failed to resurface,” said Kisii County Police Commander Ms Agnes Mudambi.
The alarmed father then dived into the pool which is next to his home and fished out his daughter, who did not respond to first aid and subsequent attempts to resuscitate her.
He then called police attached to Kenyenya Police station in the company of his wife when he realized she had died.
“My officers rushed to the scene where they found the child who was unresponsive at the time. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Nyamache sub-county Hospital,” said Ms Mudambi.
Her grief-stricken parents were too distraught to speak to the Nation.
Meanwhile, the body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
