Child labor in various sub-counties have been cited as one of the contributors towards continued decline in education standards within Nakuru County.
This is according to Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui who said the trend is mostly in rural areas.
Speaking when he launched county bursary worth Sh48 million to benefit 9,040 students, Kinyanjui said child labor issues have wrecked havoc in parts of Njoro, Subukia and Naivasha affecting standards of education in primary schools.
“There are issues of child labor in some parts of the county such as Njoro, Subukia where our children instead of going to school go to the farms and this has greatly impacted negatively on performance. Recently we held a stakeholders meeting to have discussions on how we can revamp our education sector in the county," he said.
County Executive Committee for Education Raymond Komen said they will provide support to parents in expanding education levels
“Already the process of recruiting ECD teachers is ongoing and in the next financial year we look forward to equip the centres,” he said.
