Cases of suspected child trafficking in Kisumu have been termed as false alarm meant to instill fear among parents and children.
A fortnight ago, two young girls were seriously beaten at Kisian in the outskirts of Kisumu town after they were accused of stealing children.
That same week, a lady was beaten in Seme constituency on similar grounds that were later confirmed to be untrue.
East Seme ward representative Aggrey Ogosi termed the child trafficking issue a false alarm meant to bring fear among children.
Mr Ogosi said the issue has gone wide forcing many children to miss school for fear of being stolen.
“Some of the children have refused to go to school for fear of being abducted. It is bad in the villages, one day I was driving and whenever children saw the car they ran away because they fear they will be taken away,” he said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Thursday, Ogosi said the report has no basis since no report has been made to the police noting that no missing child has been reported.
He said many people will be killed for no apparent reason.
Ogosi said his people were attacked in the ward by the public for involvement in child trafficking which was found to be untrue.
“I call upon leaders to come out and tell their people that all is well and the rumors be ignored,” he said.
