The government will from the next financial year (2017/2018) allocate funds to run activities of children governments in schools, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has said.
Speaking in Nairobi on Thursday when he launched the 3rd National Children Government Congress, Matiang'i said that this will be to demonstrate the government's commitment and faith in children's ability to manage their own affairs.
"I believe in developing learners' ability by increasing their participation in and out of the classroom. This is why from the next financial year we will start allocating funds to children governments to enable them run their activities. They will manage those funds in close consultation with their school administrations," said Dr Matiangi.
The CS also noted that the on-going curriculum reforms will help learners realise their full potential in leadership as well as equip them with the necessary skills for their day-to-day life in society.
The small governments are elected by learners themselves as opposed to the prefect-model where student leaders were selected by the school administration.
The children government programme is a joint initiative between the Kenyan government and UNICEF and it is aimed at empowering learners and helping them acquire leadership skills at a young age.
