IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba has said he will not resign despite protests by National Super Alliance (Nasa) supporters and leaders.
Speaking to KTN News on Tuesday, Chiloba said he was busy preparing for October 26 presidential election.
Chiloba said Nasa supporters have a constitutional right to demonstrate.
“People have a constitutional right to protest. To state what the issues are. I have not thought about resigning. What I know is that I got responsibility before me and I have to discharge that responsibility," Chiloba said.
He dismissed calls by Nasa leaders and supporters for him to leave office, saying the Supreme Court did not find him or any IEBC official culpable for the irregularities in the August elections.
"Today it is me, tomorrow it is someone else because of the short term gains we are trying to pursue. The country needs to calm down and see what we can do to ensure that we meet the standards set out by the Supreme Court in the fresh election," Chiloba said.
Tuesday morning, Nasa supporters camped near Anniversary Towers, where IEBC main offices are located, protesting against Chiloba.
Police used teargas to disperse the demonstrators.
