Operations by chinese contractor on the disputed land in Athi River, Machakos County came to a hault prematurely after aggrieved farmers protested against them last week.
The contractors from Sichuan Yungzhi Construction Company Limited quit the site on Monday after the story on the farmers demonstration was published and broadcasted on various media.
According to Alphonse Mutuku, who claims ownership of the land that he had leased to over 50 farmers for almost 17 years, the chinese tycoon who had sent the contraction firm was behind the stoppage of operations.
Mutuku said the chinese who headed the operations on the land had called him a day after they left the land making enquiries on the situation on the ground.
He said the contractor told him on the phone they did not know that the land they said had been sold to their client by Jane Kaburi was under disputes.
The contraction firm had started erecting a concrete perimeter walled fence around the land under directives of its client before hundreds of farmers took to streets and demonstrated against it accussing them of land grabbing.
The farmers have embarked on normal operations on the 2.25 hactres land as they wait to see what happens next, they have vowed that they will not move out of their farms without compensation by the investor.
