A Chinese-owned leather firm in Kiambu risks closure over health concerns. 

According to a local daily, Times Unit Industries has been presented with a closure notice dated December 13 for allegedly operating under health-threatening conditions. 

The firm has been put on the spot for allegedly discharging untreated wastewater into public sewers, use of asbestos for roofing and lack of ventilation. 

It has dilapidated the floor on the entire premises.

In the closure notice, the company’s director, Cheng Jin has been asked to comply with public health requirements and recommendations as outlined in the Public Health Act with immediate effect.

 On his part, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) director Stephen Kimutu said that the firm under probe over health issues, adding that it has been given at least two notices in the past.

The leather plant, which is located within Thika Town, has until January 13, 2018, to respond to the concerns or else an action will be taken against the management. 

The directors of the company also risk prosecution upon failure to comply with the order. 

Hundreds of workers risk losing jobs if the notice of closure is effected.
