Those who succumbed to the waterborne disease are two inmates from Kodiaga Main Prison and a resident in the neighbouring Otonglo village.

Kisumu County Executive Committee Member in charge of Health Dr Elizabeth Ogaja said a specialised ward has also been set at Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOTRH) to deal with complicated cases.

She disclosed that 28 people were currently admitted in at JOTRH hospital after being diagnosed with cholera.

She said that four treatment centers had been established in Kisumu to control movement of patients as a move to contain the spread of Cholera in the lake side city.

"We have established the four centers to control the spread of the bacteria due to transportation of patients through public means but we also have a specialized ward here so as to deal with any complicated conditions," she said.

Dr. Ogaja said the amenities have been equipped with medicine to ensure that all patients are re-hydrated and treated hence preventing more deaths.

She added that all eateries have been put on notice to ensure their staff undergo all the requirements of the Public Health Act and are free of any bacteria to avoid further spread of the disease.

She warned surveillance has been intensified in the County collaboration to ensure that the situation does not get out of hand.

Prof. Barrack Abonyo, Kisumu CEC in charge of water attributed the outbreak of Cholera at Kodiaga Main Prison and the neighboring Otonglo area to drinking of polluted water sourced from River Kodiaga.

He urged members of the public to be on the lookout besides observing high hygienic standards to keep the disease at bay.

He said water professionals from the County government had tested water drawn from River Kodiaga and found it to be contaminated.

Prof. Abonyo confided that the prison's water treatment plant broke down a month ago hence the current state adding that the county government has supplied the correctional facility with enough chlorine to treat water.

Clean treated drinking water from Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO), he said was available at Otonglo advising area residents to only drink the water from county government kiosks to avoid infection.
