Médecins Sans Frontières International has said the cholera outbreak that has ravaged parts of Mandera County for the last three months has finally been contained.
According to Ahmed Garat, the MSF team leader in Garissa who spoke to journalists on Wednesday, only 27 cholera patients are still receiving treatment at the organisation's health centre with 10 people being referred to the MFS's unit on Tuesday night but are in stable condition.
“By today (Wednesday) morning we only had 27 patients with 10 of them brought last (Tuesday) night. We can now comfortably say that the outbreak has been contained. In the past we would receive up to 70 patients each day but now things have greatly improved,” said Mr Garat.
The health official was upbeat that in few days to come, the entire county would be cholera free.
“This shows that in the near future we will have completely dealt with this cholera crisis here in Mandera,” he added.
Médecins San Frontires is a non-governmental organisation that has been camping in Mandera county to help battle the disease outbreaks that has so far claimed 19 lives and affecting over 1,200 others.
