Botswana retailer Choppies is seeking to expand its market in Kenyan within the next three months.

The retailer has expressed interest in opening at least 20 different branches in the country as part of its Sh20 billion expansion plan.

“We want to enrich the basket of goods and that is why we are going for the middle income and high-end market with our new stores,” Vijay Kumar, the Choppies executive director for East Africa said.

According to the reports, the retailer chain is looking to rebrand all Ukwala branches it purchased into Choppies.

"We are looking at between 20 and 25 high-end branches and the first five should be open by the end of January next year,” he said.

Choppies joins the likes French retailer Carrefour along with South Africa's Massmart and Shoprite supermarkets, who are eager to tap into the market.

The move comes at a time when Nakumatt and Uchumi are facing financial set backs and could spell the introduction of new retailers looking to dominate the market.

Choppies has already secured a branch at the South Field Mall in Embakasi and will be opening its door the first week of December.
