The head of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Jackson Ole Sapit, has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for the state-sanctioned media blackout to be removed.

Sapit made the case that the Kenyan public had a right to information and the government's move was a violation of that sacred right.

''We are calling on the government to switch the media back on. Kenyans have a right to information. They need to know what is happening around them. The media shutdown does not help the political crisis in the country,'' Ole Sapit said.

The Anglican head was speaking today to the faithful in church during a service.

State authorities have justified the media shutdown as a response to an attempt to overthrow a legally-installed government.
