St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiambu County has withdrawn a case involving one of its priests.
It is alleged that the priest took Sh700,000 from the church’s vestry last month. The priest has since been sent on compulsory leave over the incident. A church member who spoke in confidence said church members are angry by the decision to withdraw the case against the priest. “Yes it is true the priest took the money because he was recorded by security cameras but the church has decided to withdraw the case. Church members are angry about the decision but we had no option other than to drop the case and leave everything to God,” said the church member. He added that the case was reported to the Kiambu Police Station when the church leadership realised the money had gone missing. The church member noted that the case was dropped even before the team probing the incident completed the investigations.Kiambu County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Paul Wambugu confirmed that the church withdrew the case.Wambugu said they had no option but to drop the investigations because the decision was already made by the church leadership. “We could not oppose the decision to withdraw the case since even police had not finished investigating the matter. The church can tell its members how they resolved the matter,” he noted.
