Churches and other religious institutions have been challenged to partner with the government in solving the street families menace in Kenya's major cities.
Former mayor of the defunct Nakuru municipal council Benson Mwangi said churches have the capacity to absorb some of the children from the streets with the help of the government.
According to Mwangi, the problem of street families cannot be left to the government alone.
“Churches have already established structures and most churches today have huge resources and my plea to them is that they need to allocate some of their resources towards rehabilitating some of these street children,” said Mwangi.
He added: “The government alone cannot solve this problem and that is why the society needs to step in and support the government in getting rid of this problem."
Mwangi said that the problem of street families is a time bomb waiting to explode.
He said the families might turn into cartels that will be hard to tame.
“These children are not useless as the society might perceive but they have great untapped potential and all they need is support from the society,” he said.
