A senior official working with the county government of Nairobi has accused boda boda riders, especially those operating at Nairobi Central Business District of promoting crime.
City Hall Security Director Peter Mbaya said the decision to eject the riders from the city's CBD will help curb rising crime at East and Central Africa's largest city.
"They will be free to operate elsewhere but not at the CBD," Mbaya said on Monday at a press briefing.
"We have established they are the main people who help criminals gangs get away after terrorizing motorists and pedestrians."
The Nairobi County Government on Monday announced an immediate ban on boda boda operations in the City Centre amid a public outcry over criminal activities in the CBD.
He said beginning Tuesday, January 23, boda boda operators will not be allowed in Nairobi's CBD adding that only motorcycles having carrier boxes or those offering courier services and have branded boxes will be allowed into the Central Business District.
Criminal gangs operating within Nairobi CBD have been accused of stealing from Nairobians and escaping on motorbikes.
