Hired contractors have not been spared either as they have never been paid for the 2013 financial year, a fact that has led to frequent protests in the city as witnessed in the recent past.

Garbage collection companies and road contractors are some of that hard hit by the financial crunch. For instance, waste collection firms working under the Waste and Environment Management Association of Kenya, are demanding over Sh100 million shillings from the city-county. And as the association chair, Samuel Onyancha revealed, workers have been on a go slow for over a month.

“We are currently on a go slow, and it never started today or just yesterday. It is something that began more than a month ago. How can anyone survive without any pay for a period of over four months?” Onyancha said.

However, Jonathan Mueke who is the deputy governor said the cash crisis currently facing the county is attributed to the ever-bulging wage bill and evident failure by the Senate to adopt the revenue allocation bill that could see counties get additional funds from the national Treasury.
