Nairobi county government has announced that it will partner with the telecom giant firm, Safaricom to roll out high-speed fibre optic connections in city estates.
Governor Evans Kidero on Tuesday issued that Safaricom will provide City Hall with ultra-modern back-end infrastructure for the internet project and an additional M-Pesa platforms for their electronic payment e-Jijipay.
Kidero made the big announcement at City Hall where a Safaricom team, led by Adhiambo David and Steve Okeyo , had paid him a courtesy call.
Kidero further said his government will partner with Safaricom company to decentralise its ICT roles to seven different locations within the City.
City Hall says the sh4 billion internet project is meant to improve general household connectivity from the present 10 percent to around forty.
The phase one pilot project is set to commence in Lang’ata and surrounding estates in the next one month. The entire project is also expected to be completed in three years time. Safaricom limited company has so far laid out about 1,300 kilometers of fibre optic cables across in the county.
Feasibility studies are currently being conducted in seven locations.
