As candidates who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination last year start joining Form One today (Tuesday), some schools in Nairobi have started admitting day scholars.
State House Girls' School Principal Joan Muoti said they have slots for only 90 students for its day-wing programme but they have over 120 applications.
Muoti said the government has dedicated the necessary infrastructural grants to ensure the programme succeeds.
"We are grateful that the promises made by the Ministry of Education are being actualised and issues of staffing are being handled to ensure the smooth running of schools and to ensure students' needs are met," she said.
Lenana School Principal William Kemei has also revealed the institution is ready to admit day scholars alongside boarders as the new term begins.
He said he will only give opportunities to 45 students from the school's catchment area, as per the ministry’s directive.
“The guidelines are that he (student) must be coming from within reach of the school. Being a day wing, it has to be within an area where a child can go home without any hitches in travel,” Kemei said.
Other national schools selected within the city to open day-wing classes are; Pangani Girls', Moi Girls', Ngara Girls', Buruburu Girls', Embakasi Girls', Arya Parklands and Nembu Girls.
Others are Dagoretti High School, Langata Secondary, Upper Hill, St George's Girls, Hospital Hill and Ofafa Jericho.
However, Starehe Boys' Centre and Moi Forces Academy, Nairobi, have expressed unpreparedness to admit the day scholars.
