According to Raphael Okumu, Founding Member and Executive Director of TEARS Group Kenya, it is the role of the Nakuru county government to educate the public on matters of governance across the county.

“It is the county government’s mandate to conduct civic education across the county assisted by Non-governmental organisations and checked by the human right institutions,” said Okumu.

Speaking during the Inter-Ethnic Relations Forum, Masese Kemunche from Centre for Democracy and Good Governance blamed the county government for failing to conduct civic education across the county.

“It has come to our attention that the county government has a poor civic education strategy across the county. This is significant because we have got some of our members of the societies who do not know even their fundamental rights,” he said.

Masese challenged the human rights activists to petition the county government in the relevant constitutional ways to have civic education in wards and across the county.

Masterpeace Nakuru member Judy Jerotich revealed that her Visoi Ward have never seen any public participation or civic education since the county government was devolved. She told the panel that it was inhuman for a government to be in office yet it does not engage the subject they serve.

Nakuru County Public service board chair Peter Mbae who was present at the meeting requested the human rights organisations to engage the county government.
