Nakuru County Commissioner Mohamed Birik has warned civil servants in the county against engaging themselves in the on-going referendum signature collection drive.
The drive is being spearheaded by the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (Cord) and a section of governors in the country seeking to increase funds allocated to the counties among other key issues.
While talking to officials of his office in Njoro Constituency, during a tour of the area to address security matters, the commissioner warned that civil servants found using state resources to campaign for the referendum will be disciplined.
“Civil servants must concentrate on their duties and implement government’s policies. They should not engage in opposition politics and embarrass the government. Those found will face harsh disciplinary action,” he said.
Birik added that he has received intelligent reports that some civil servants in the county were using his office resources to campaign for the referendum by distributing materials and also dishing out money.
His calls come after URP allied members in support of the referendum said they were attacked over the weekend by rowdy youths as they collected signatures in Mau Narok.
The leaders accused Jubilee allied leaders of funding the youth to disrupt the exercise.
